MODULE 1: Acquiring the PCs

Online/Offline Resources

Readings

  1. Procurement activities refer to all the activities necessary to acquire second-hand PCs.
  2. International donor institutions are defined here and examples of these institutions are listed in this link.
  3. Acquiring PCs from donors looks at the role of donors and the growing trend over the last few years for corporations and government agencies in the developed world to lease their IT equipment from the manufacturers instead of purchasing it. It is these PCs that are particularly suitable for donation and refurbishing.
  4. Second-hand PCs can be sourced from several channels. This document on sources and suppliers looks at these different channels. The benefits and drawbacks of each of the different sources are also discussed.
  5. Issues that need to be addressed with regards to the shipping process are documented in this shipping document. The shipping process, shipping companies, shipping agents, costs involved, dead on arrival rates and hardware specifications for donated PCs are all covered.
  6. Supply and shipping costs looks at the different costs that make up the total cost of acquiring the PCs.
  7. The process of importation and customs is covered in this document. Duties and tax exemption are also addressed.
  8. Fundraising will be an essential part of the technical service centre operations. This document is an excellent resource to understand what is required in order to source funding.
  9. This is a guideline for sourcing PCs and looks at quality, volume, make and model and availability of spare parts.
  10. You will need to create a letter to approach potential donors with. The article on fundraising in this module also has a section on proposal writing – refer to page 13 of that document for additional information on this subject.
