MODULE 1: Acquiring the PCs

What you need to do

Activity 2

As the manager of a technical service centre, an international donor agency has just sent you a letter offering you 500 PCs as a donation.

Click here to read the letter from the international donor agency. When you click on this link a new window of your web browser will open. In this way, you can keep the letter open, and refer to this activity page at the same time.

The letter comprises the following points:

  • PCs are in London and transportation is not provided by the donor
  • There is no funding for transport
  • All logistics with regards to importation must be taken care of ie. Import duties, customs and excise
  • Disposal at end-of-life will be carried out in an environmentally friendly way

The donor requests that you urgently respond to the letter, incorporating the following points:

  • Proposal of what you intend to do with the donated PCs
  • Proposal of funding for all transportation costs from London to your technical service centre
  • What arrangements for transport have been made – how long will it take to collect them (must be collected within one month)
  • How importation logistics are going to be taken care of
  • Evidence that the Official Journal of the European Union on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has been read - refer to module 5 for this information
  • If the relevant information cannot be found – explain the difficulties you encountered

Prepare your response to the donor’s offer of donation. To assist you in answering the question, we have prepared an activity template in Microsoft Word that you can use to complete your answers.

Once you have completed this document, save it in an appropriate location on your computer. Then send an email to your group with the activity template attached.

You may find it useful to refer back to this document in later activities, so please ensure that you save it somewhere that you will easily be able to find it.

At this time, you should start receiving the responses of other members of the group. When you look through these responses, you might like to consider the following questions: Why do you think other people responded as they did? Do you agree with their responses? What do you think is good about their inputs? Where you do not agree, is this because you think their ideas are unsuitable in your country or in their own country? Your online mentor will also ask you further questions based on the inputs from the group. At any point, you can share any of your responses to these questions or any other observations with the rest of the group, either by pressing the Reply button on the e-mail or by clicking on this link (Share further comments on activity three with the group).
